I used to be born in Sydney, Australia, as the one youngster of fogeys who immigrated from China with little monetary safety or data of English. I spent most of my childhood in Sydney’s Chinatown, by my mom’s aspect throughout faculty holidays as she labored the checkout at a Chinese language grocery store.
As a baby I used to be mystified by the magnificent lions that would seem, as if from nowhere, on the streets of Chinatown and the Sydney suburbs. I might watch with awe as they carried out elaborate dances throughout cultural occasions.
My work as a filmmaker is devoted to Australian immigrant communities just like the one I grew up in. Once I was commissioned by the Powerhouse Museum to direct this brief documentary, I found that just about each Asian individual I spoke to has a buddy or a member of the family within the lion dancing neighborhood.
The dedication of lion dancers to their craft is astounding, and I need to draw consideration to the folks contained in the efficiency, individuals who dedicate a big a part of their lives to this custom.
