LOS ANGELES — Two nonprofits are calling on artists to submit their concepts for a future memorial at Griffith Park supposed to rejoice the beloved mountain lion P-22.
The memorial is meant to encourage residents and guests to consider their connections with P-22, and the way the mountain lion’s legacy reworked conservation efforts. The Nationwide Wildlife Federation’s #SaveLACougars marketing campaign and Associates of Griffith Park are main the undertaking in partnership with the L.A. Metropolis Division of Recreation and Parks and Metropolis Councilwoman Nithya Raman.
To obtain submission pointers for the sculptures, artists can e-mail p22mountainlion@nwf.org to be thought-about for the method. Emails must be despatched by Dec. 31.
In 2012, Associates of Griffith Park first found P-22, the mountain lion dwelling within the park after crossing two busy L.A. freeways. P-22 modified how residents view the significance of dwelling alongside wildlife, prompting the constructing of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing.
The mountain lion remained on the park for 10 years, monitored by a radio collar. P-22 was later captured in December 2022 and euthanized after checks revealed he suffered from traumatic accidents and long-term well being points.
“P-22 continues to be deeply missed by individuals all around the world, and his loss is very felt in Los Angeles,” stated Beth Pratt, California regional govt director for the Nationwide Wildlife Federation and chief of the #SaveLACougars marketing campaign. “This exceptional cat deserves a memorial that acknowledges his unimaginable legacy and provides individuals an opportunity to mirror upon their love for him.”
Gerry Hans, president of Associates of Griffith Park, stated the proposed memorial shall be a reminder to guests far into the way forward for how P-22 “triggered a sea change in serious about the way in which people can stay alongside wildlife in city settings.”
“P-22 led an unimaginable life as our resident Griffith Park mountain lion,” Raman stated in an announcement. “His unbelievable journey to Griffith Park, and the life he constructed right here, reminds us that our nice park was additionally his park.”
